Due to the COVID-19 outbreak surging across the entire world, the world of anime last year was rather lackluster, to say the least. Many studios were forced to shut down, which meant that new releases were limited while ongoing productions failed to hit audiences as hard as they should have. With that, here’s our list of the top 4 most anticipated anime of 2021 – My Hero Academia Season 5, The promised neverland season 2, The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 2 and The Seven Deadly Sins Season 5.
However, this year’s anime seasons line-up is looking much more favorable, with several shows, both new and old set to release.
1. The Seven Deadly Sins (Season 5) – January 2021
Perhaps one of this year’s most highly anticipated anime, the final season of The Seven Deadly Sins (Nanatsu no Taizai) is scheduled to drop on the second week of January. This release was originally planned for late 2020, but much like a lot of other shows, it was delayed by the COVID-19 global pandemic and subsequent lockdowns.
This anime turns Christianity upside down, with the biblical Seven Deadly Sins as the good guys while the Ten Commandments are the terrifying villains. It was launched with much acclaim, with its theological and moral undertones quickly gaining a massive following.
2. My Hero Academia (Season 5) – March 2021
Anime may be over-saturated with shows about superheroes and magical powers, but My Hero Academia (Boku no Hiro Akademia) is undoubtedly miles apart from others in the genre.
After an impressive fourth season, fans are eagerly awaiting to see what lies in store for Deku and the rest of his classmates at U.A. High School.
The show is set in a world where most people are equipped with superhuman abilities, referred to as “Quirks.” However, the protagonist, Izuku Midoriya, has none – that is, until he meets All Might, the greatest hero of all time.
3. The Promised Neverland (Season 2) – January 2021
When the beautiful visuals of The Promised Neverland (Yakusoku no Nebarando) first unfolded on screen in 2019, many were understandably horrified.
This didn’t stop them from devouring it, though! The first season ended in a massive cliffhanger, which is why thousands of fans across the globe are excitedly looking forward to seeing how the rest of the story pans out.
The Promised Neverland follows a group of children at the Grace Field House orphanage, who slowly come to the realization that their lives aren’t as idyllic as they’d like to believe. As they come to terms with the truth, they’re forced to make a slew of seemingly rash decisions, in a bid to change their fates forever.
4. The Rising of the Shield Hero (Season 2) – Early 2021
Nobody expected The Rising of the Shield Hero (Tate no Yusha no Nariagari) to make as huge of an impact on audiences as it did, back when it first premiered. Isekai – an anime genre, in which an ordinary person is transported to a fantastical world – is traditionally perceived as extremely niche; however, this show quickly proved itself to be capable of drawing in tens of thousands of viewers.
In The Rising of the Shield Hero, a boy named Naofumi Iwatani is suddenly called to a parallel world, where he’s tasked with fending off a group of invading monsters called the “Waves.”
While other heroes are given weapons, he instead receives a shield, which sets him off on a journey of pain, betrayal, and self-discovery.
